10 Exciting Weekend Getaways from Delhi

On Instagram, we get asked one question so often: How do you get time to travel so much? The truth is that we get as much time as most of you. To manage travelling as much as we do, we visit destinations close to us on weekends and save the leaves for longer holidays to far off places.

Keeping this in mind, we are doing a series on weekend getaways and road trips from major cities in India, and what better place to start with than the capital city of New Delhi. Fortunately, for those of you living in Delhi, there are an uncountable number of destinations you can visit. Here are some weekend getaways from Delhi that have been visited and loved by us and our fellow travel bloggers.

But before we start, there are some things we’d like to highlight:

  1. Understand that COVID is still raging – Please wear your mask at all times, covering the mouth and nose. And avoid going to crowded places and areas.
  2. Please do not litter any place you visit – It is unacceptable to treat nature the way we do. Do not litter places you visit, because if you do, there will be nothing beautiful left in the world.
  3. Avoid the use of single-use plastic – Carry your own reusable water bottle, straw, and cutlery (for roadside eating). Start with the water bottle, at least. You can ask for it to be filled at restaurants and your hotel. Or carry a bottle with a filter if you’re too embarrassed to ask. Avoid those Bisleri/mineral water bottles as much as you can.

None of the above mentioned things are too difficult to do. Please take small steps to save your planet.

Jaipur is the capital and biggest city of Rajasthan. With its royal heritage, there are plenty of things to do and it makes a great weekend trip from Delhi. In 2 days you can comfortably explore the city’s historic centre as well as the forts and palaces surrounding the royal city.

Jaipur was founded by Maharaja Jai Singh II in 1727 when he moved the capital of his kingdom from nearby Amer. In the 19th century, the Prince of Wales visited Jaipur and to welcome him, all buildings were painted terracotta pink.

7. Landour, Uttarakhand – 320 km

Explored by Trisha from Try Wandering More

Landour is a quaint little cantonment town located 7 km north of Mussoorie in the foothills of the Himalayas at 7500 ft. Surrounded by the Himalayas and the Shivalik hills, Landour has a dramatic landscape and serene atmosphere. The architecture and food culture take you back in time to the British Era.

Mussoorie has lost its charm over the years due to traffic and over-commercialization. On the other hand, despite being a close neighbour, Landour is peaceful and relatively untouched. It makes for a relaxing getaway with beautiful views and the perfect hilly vibes.

Landour can be visited throughout the year with summer (Apr-Jun) being the perfect time to visit to escape the scorching heat. However, I’d suggest you visit in the winter months from December to February so you can witness the spectacular phenomena that is the Winter Line. It is a false horizon created due to the temperature difference of the mountains and valley. It can apparently only be seen in Landour and Switzerland. How cool is that?

How to Reach Landour

You can drive down from Delhi which would take about 6 hours 30 minutes. Alternately, take a private or government bus to Mussoorie and then a cab to Landour. You hire a direct cab to Landour/Mussoorie as well directly from Delhi.

Dehradun is the closest city to Landour (17 km) that has an airport and railway station so you could opt for either of these modes of transport and then take a cab or bus to Landour. To maximize time, take an overnight train to Dehradun. This way you’ll be able to leave after work on Friday and be in Landour early morn on Saturday. You’ll have nearly two full days in Landour before you take the overnight train or evening Shatabdi back to Delhi.

Things to Do in Landour

The best way to see the beauty of Landour is to simply walk. Get off at Chardukan or start at your accommodation and walk the Upper Chakkar – a 3.5 km circular route that is an easy walk.

  1. Lal Tibba: Laal Tibba at 8000m hill is the highest point in Mussoorie – an epic place to visit for sunrise and sunset.
  2. Kellogg’s Church: Built in 1903, Kellogg’s Church exhibits marvellous gothic architecture with magnificent stained glass windows.

From the moment you arrive in Pushkar, you will feel the place unlike anywhere else you have visited in Rajasthan. Surprisingly, despite being one of the holiest cities in the world, Pushkar is quite laid-back. The colourful streets are busy, the crowd in the queue outside Brahma Temple is wildly enthusiastic, and food lovers crowd the street food joints.

How to Reach Pushkar

The best way to reach Pushkar from Delhi for the weekend is by overnight train or bus. Busses will be direct but by train, you will first need to go to Ajmer and then take a 30-minute taxi to Pushkar. If you have more time on hand, you can also opt for a road trip and cover the distance of 420 km in 8 – 9 hours.  If you need to reach by flight, then know that the nearest airports are at Kishangarh (45 km but not well served by domestic flights) or Jaipur (155 km away but well served by domestic flights)

9. Amritsar, Punjab – 450 km
